“Other Tales is Sammy Baloji’s first solo exhibition in both Sweden and Denmark. It offers an opportunity to introduce, through his oeuvre, a larger conversation on the continuous colonial gestures and actions that tie the West to African territories, specifically the Congo. While providing an overview of Baloji’s most recent productions, the exhibition also offers a broad insight into his investigative methodology.”
This book of 220 pages is conceived as a guide and a catalog to the exhibition and contains many essays, plays, and notes. The graphic project pays homage to the first edition of the book by Pier Paolo Pasolini, Il Padre Selvaggio, the screenplay of an unborn film, set in the Congo during the civil war following the independence from Belgium, and to the iconic graphic design of Einaudi book series in the seventies. The proportion of the book, the choice of type characters, spacing and pagination is still balanced and modern: in my humble opinion, the result is still the most desirable, readable work of pagination design. Yellow and green were the colors of the flag of Congo, after the end of the Belgian colonization. In order to help text research, the color of the pages changes according to the language: plain white for English, light green for Swedish and light yellow for Danish. The graphic identity was used also on posters and social media.

Offre l’opportunità di introdurre, attraverso la sua opera, una più ampia conversazione sui continui gesti e azioni coloniali che legano l’Occidente ai territori africani, in particolare il Congo. una panoramica delle più recenti produzioni di Baloji, la mostra offre anche un’ampia panoramica della sua metodologia investigativa “.
Questo libro di 220 pagine è concepito come guida e catalogo della mostra e contiene numerosi saggi, opere teatrali e note. Il progetto grafico rende omaggio alla prima edizione de Il Padre Selvaggio di Pier Paolo Pasolini, sceneggiatura di un film mai prodotto, ambientato in Congo durante la guerra civile dopo l’indipendenza dal Belgio, e soprattutto all’iconico design grafico della collana Einaudi degli anni settanta. Le proporzioni del libro, la scelta dei caratteri tipografici, le spaziature, interlinee e l’impaginazione sono ancora equilibrate e moderne: a mio modesto parere, il risultato è ancora design desiderabile e facilmente leggibile. Il giallo e il verde erano i colori della bandiera del Congo dopo la fine della colonizzazione belga. Per facilitare la ricerca testuale, il colore delle pagine cambia in base alla lingua: bianco normale per l’inglese, verde chiaro per lo svedese e giallo chiaro per il danese. L’identità grafica è stata utilizzata anche su poster e social media.
